Protecting Your HVAC System From Storm:

Protecting Your HVAC System From Storm:

Nick August 17, 2019

Last weekend, my town experienced a severe thunderstorm.

Like all storms, it started out as a warning, but I never thought it would actually transpire into something more severe.

Before the storm hit, I turned on the weather channel so I could receive constant updates on the storm. As I was watching, they brought on a local HVAC technician to provide tips and tricks on protecting HVAC equipment around the home. I was surprised about this segment, because I never thought to protect my HVAC equipment during a storm before. My main concern was keeping power, but I hated the idea of paying thousands in HVAC repairs if something went wrong. I listened to the HVAC technician intently. The first thing he recommended, was to turn off the HVAC system completely. Next, he said that if we had a cover for our outside condenser units, that we should put it on as soon as possible. This would protect it from harsh rain and debri. The HVAC technician also suggested that we put away anything in the yard that could fly away and hit our HVAC system. Chairs, lawn games, and even dog toys could be lifted up during extreme winds, and cause serious damage to an HVAC system! After hearing these three suggestions, I immediately started the process. I turned off my HVAC system, cleaned up the yard, and put the slip cover over the unit. I’m so glad I did this because 20 minutes later the sky went black, the wind picked up, and the rain began to fall. I can happily say my HVAC system survived the storm.
