I was a college student with a job and my own vehicle. I knew my girlfriend was only 17, and I knew that her parents were unhappy that I was a college student. When my girlfriend got pregnant, they kicked her out of the house. We had to find a place to live quickly, because I was living in the dorms. My girlfriend couldn’t move in and stay for a long time. We found a small apartment just outside of town, and I had to drive 12 miles to school everyday. It was a real pain, but I made it to class on time every morning. My girlfriend continued to attend online classes until she got her high school diploma. Our first apartment was a real dump. We had a studio apartment on the 5th floor. We didn’t have any central AC and the wall heaters didn’t work very well. We didn’t pay much for rent, so we used our money to buy a space heater for the winter months and an air conditioner for the summer months. Using the space heater was very cheap during the winter months, but we had to spend about $50 more each month to use the air conditioner. My girlfriend and I lived in that apartment for three years. During that time, I graduated from college and my girlfriend had a baby. We have a house in the suburbs now with central heat and A/C We also have two more children. My wife and I will never forget where we started and how hard we fought to be together.
