My parents have a window air conditioning system in their home.
- They don’t have a strong summer season where they live, so they don’t require constant air conditioning.
The only time they need AC is at night when they sleep or it’s severely humid. Even with their dehumidifier, the two of them have a hard time keeping the humidity at a reasonable level. A few weeks ago, my parents decided that they should clean the AC units. They have one in their main residing space and one in their kitchen. My dad took the one from the kitchen and headed out back with it. My mom heard some cursing as he was taking the back off the AC unit. She walked over to the door to confirm he was all right, but when he turned around and she saw what he was doing, she was hesitant. Their entire Ac component was filled with green mold. There were chunks of leaves in the mess and severe dust. My dad put on rubber gloves while beginning to submerse the casing in a solution of water and clorox. He was scrubbing the dirt and mold off their entire AC casing. Every couple hours, he’d dump the dirty water and get clean water. In the meantime, my mom was carefully wiping down the fan blades to scrubbing the mold and dirt off them. Once the two of them cleaned and sanitized the components, then began to piece it back together. My dad had their entire AC component together and it wouldn’t switch on. My mom came into the house and picked up what appeared to be a piece of cardboard and asked my dad if it was substantial. All she heard was, ‘Oh Man!’ as he started taking some screws back out.
