When I was hired as the office manager for a local accounting firm I was pretty excited. I had worked for years at a smaller firm and I was the secretary but I applied for the job. I knew it would come with more responsibilities and I was fine with that but I didn’t know that it would include being a maintenance person as well. I thought it odd when I open the bottom drawer of my desk and found a small tool box by I figured that they just started there. Maybe they needed a screwdriver or something to hang a picture now and then but I assumed they had a maintenance person that took care of everything else. I returned from lunch one day and found a note from my boss saying that he needed to see me and I was a bit confused. So far as I knew there were no major problems going on in the office and everything was running smoothly. Come to find out he handed me the manual for the HVAC system and told me that the instructions were inside for changing out the filters. He also told me where the new filters were located in the storage room and said that if I had any problems to let him know. Now I am not a handy person and my husband normally handles all of those type of things at home so I really wasn’t sure where to start. I didn’t want to see him incompetent so I simply told him that I would take care of it. I now understood why there were tools in my desk but I had to go online to watch videos on how to change the filters in the system that we had. I guess I should have asked for a complete list of duties when I started the job.
