A Winter trip to the zoo is tough without heating

During the Christmas break from school, the kids get bored.

There’s little to do that does not involve snow.

We are located in the North and sub zero temperatures are a way of life. We struggle to come up with new and creative activities where the kids can keep warm. My youngest daughter heard they were hosting an event at the local zoo. It was a holiday even allowing kids to see the different animals in a Winter setting. I wasn’t sure how that would work since most of the species wouldn’t do well in the cold weather. They are native to tropical regions and deserts where the temperature never falls below freezing. We decided to visit the zoo and spend the afternoon. The temperature was hovering around 23 degrees that morning. I was thankful I had bundled the kids up in layers of sweaters and winter coats. I had no idea how long we would be outside and exposed to the weather. It turned out that the animals were mostly inside heated buildings. There was also a large heated tent with powerful space heaters running. They offered free hot cocoa and candy canes under the tent and there were some activities such as coloring and a photo booth. We switched between the heated venues and the tent but it was exhausting. The kids were overheated every time they were inside, and shivering whenever we stepped outside. They continually wanted to remove their coats and hats. We eventually left the zoo and headed to the movies. The theater was perfectly heated and we could all strip down, eat some popcorn and relax.
