When she said her hands were freezing too, I told her to wear some gloves.
I know that wasn’t what she wanted to hear. I know she wanted me to agree to call the heating company and make an appointment to get a new furnace in the house. She gave me a terribly dirty look when I suggested wearing more clothes instead. She has been complaining about the heat in the house for weeks. We really need a new furnace for the house, but I don’t want to spend the money. Christmas is only three weeks away and I don’t want to upgrade the furnace until after the holidays are over. I called two different HVAC companies and each one of the guys told me that the furnace needed to be replaced. I was really hoping someone would be able to repair the machine, but it’s just too old. They each gave me an estimate for the new system and installation fees and it’s outrageous. There’s just no way that we can afford to make the changes and still buy gifts for everyone on the Christmas shopping list. For now, the best thing we can do is buy a small space heater for the living room. It will take some of the cold chill out of the room and help downstairs and it won’t cost a fortune. That should get us through the holidays. In January, we can reassess the situation. Perhaps then will be a better time to make the extravagant but necessary purchase.
