Old Age Leadership

Old Age Leadership

Nick January 20, 2021

President Joe Biden, at age 70, is the oldest president to take the oath of office.

The youngest president was Teddy Roosevelt who was just shy of his 43rd birthday.

On average, the age of an incoming president is about 60 years. What is amazing is that many of the nation’s first 10 presidents reached Biden’s age after leaving office, and john Adams lived to be age 90. The life expectancy in the late 17th century was quite low compared to today’s average of 71 years… Biden, however, need not worry because today in the U.S., a guy of 70 can expect to live about nine more years. Another amazing thing about the life spans of the U.S. presidents is that after those first 10, the lifespans dropped quite a bit until Herbert Hoover, who reached the age of 90, assumed the office. Since then, presidential life spans have increased. Jimmy Carter at age 96, is the oldest residing president with Ford, Reagan, and GHW Bush all reaching their 90s. Herbert Hoover was sworn in on March 4, 1929, just before the start of the Great Depression. On Christmas Eve of that year, a fire did extensive damage to the West Wing of the White House. In 1930 the reconstruction included a central Heating and A/C plan that was installed by the Carrier Engineering Company, perhaps Heating and A/C played a role in helping several current presidents live long after they left office. It is known that as people age, they lose the ability to regulate their body temperature. Biden is expected to reverse several of the outgoing president’s policies. He may benefit by not decreasing anything on the White House Heating and A/C plan that Donald Trump ordered overhauled in 2017.
