People take a lot of things for granted in this country.
I remember growing up at our college in a less developed country.
When I came here, I realized that there were a lot of things that people take as a given that were a luxury where I come from. Take something as easy as a/c in a classroom. My kids go to a college that has excellent a/c, and I believe they will really never have to worry about sitting in a sizzling classroom not being able to focus on their studies. My high college was small and poor, and the two of us were pretty much at the mercy of the weather during that morning. If it was the summer, the two of us would be lucky if there was a cross breeze that the two of us would be able to catch by opening the windows. If it was sizzling and humid and the air was still, the two of us pretty much just had to deal with it. The cooler weeks were the best, as you can well imagine! It was the year after our senior year that our college finally had window cooling systems installed. What a thing to be jealous about! Anyway, that’s why I’m so glad our kids get to have such powerful a/c in their classrooms, however just the other morning, our child was actually complaining that it was a little too cold. I reminded him that she could simply wear an extra layer. That’s when I realized I never genuinely shared with our kids just how rough the two of us had it back in our country when it came to easy things love a/c. Needless to say, they were a little more thankful for what they had when I finished our stories!
