People take a lot of things for granted in this country.
I remember growing up at our school in a less developed country.
When I came here, I realized that there were a lot of things that people take as a given that were a luxury where I come from. Take something as easy as air conditioning in a classroom. My kids go to a school that has excellent air conditioning, & I suppose they will genuinely never have to worry about resting in a hot classroom not being able to focus on their studies. My middle school was small & poor, & the two of us were pretty much at the mercy of the weather during that day. If it was the summer, the two of us would be fortunate if there was a cross breeze that the two of us would be able to catch by opening the windows. If it was hot & humid & the air was still, the two of us pretty much just had to deal with it. The cooler months were the best, as you can well imagine! It was the year after our senior year that our school finally had window air conditionings installed. What a thing to be jealous about! Anyway, that’s why I’m so cheerful our kids get to have such powerful air conditioning in their classrooms. Just the other day, our child was genuinely complaining that it was a little too cold. I reminded him that he could simply wear an extra layer. That’s when I realized I never entirely shared with our kids just how rough the two of us had it back in our country when it came to easy things prefer air conditioning. Needless to say, they were a little more thankful for what they had when I finished our stories!
