We had a lot to do as kids when I was living up north with my siblings and my cousins who were in a house just down the street from us. Both sets of parents planned it that way, which also relieves the burden of raising children when your sibling’s wife and kids are on the same street block. That meant that we were all really close friends from a young age, aside from being first cousins. We loved walking a few blocks down the road to the nearest freshwater lake that had swimming open during the summer season. However, some weeks we’d get temperatures over 100 degrees in the afternoons and it would make everything feel absolutely unbearable. I loved swimming, even in the highest temperatures, but there were days when I wanted to do nothing but stay inside our house or our cousin’s house and play video games. Our parents weren’t happy about that so we’d all get kicked out for hours at a time. If we wanted something to do with our time and it was too hot to go swimming or play street hockey, we’d pool our money and head to the movie theaters. There are few places with better air conditioning in the summer than the local cinema. On top of having cold a/c in the rooms, there was also an arcade at the front of the movie theater and it had cold air conditioning as well. We spent many hours of our childhoods playing games in these arcades and going to movies when we had enough money to afford it.
