My Dad was constantly trying to get me to become a doctor.
No shade to doctors, but that isn’t what I wanted to do with my life, however for some context, you should know that my Dad is a senior RN. She has been working for 30 years in the health industry, and done so well for herself. So, I guess she constantly hoped I’d follow in her footsteps and get a degree in nursing. I came to learn she even had some school picked out where I could go and get the best training. But, I had other ideas. My best friend’s dad is an HVAC serviceman, and my friend and I got to talk one time about the HVAC industry. I was at their apartment when she was installing a smart temperature control and got curious. She asked me to assist him, and that is when the entire conversation about working as a HVAC serviceman came about, then later that evening, I went home, did some research, and realized this was a wonderful job path. So, a few weeks later, I broke the news to my Dad that I was going to work as a HVAC serviceman. She wasn’t sure about this choice, and she made sure to mention that I was a woman and this was a male-dominated industry. But, I mentioned times are different, and companies were hiring female HVAC servicemans, well, I can proudly report that I was right. I got work right away after graduating, and it’s been a decade of enjoying an amazing job in the HVAC industry. Follow your dreams, not someone else’s.
