One time when I was 15, I agreed to babysit three little kids.
My parents knew the mother and father and they set up the arrangement.
The parents left for a wedding on a Saturday morning around noon. I was responsible for the three children until 9 p.m. that evening. I made the kids lunch and we watched a movie on the television. I was starting to get tired when the smallest child started to cry. I got up and grabbed the baby. It was a little cold and that house, so I looked for the thermostat. I couldn’t find a thermostat anywhere in that house and it was getting colder and colder. I knew the furnace was probably out. I put on my sweatshirt and I decided to make a pizza for the kids. I thought the oven running would add some warm air to the living space. I couldn’t figure out how to work the oven, and the pizza wouldn’t fit in the microwave. When I figured out how to turn on the oven, I popped in the cheese and ham pizza and returned to the kids. A few minutes later, I heard a weird and loud sound coming from the basement. Since my family has a furnace, I knew that the sound was not good. I assumed that was the reason why we didn’t have any heat in the house. I called my dad at home and I tried to get some advice. He helped me light the pilot light so the furnace would come on and heat the house. Thankfully, that fixed the heating problem.
