My WIFI thermostat was hacked.
- A long amount of time went by before I noticed what was happening.
I always heard that WIFI thermostats and smart thermostats were super secure, so when our thermostat was doing random things on its own, the thought that it might have been hacked never even crossed my mind. It first started one Summer day when I got home from work. I entered my home and it felt like I was standing in a gas furnace. I was genuinely disappointed because I was looking forward to walking into a cool, air conditioned home. I went to my WIFI thermostat and it said that indeed the gas furnace was on! I turned off the gas furnace and turned on my central A/C unit. It wasn’t long before my home was once again at a comfortable temperature. Then, it happened again the next day. In the evening before I go to bed, I always go to my WIFI thermostat and turn off the system and turn on the programmable thermostat setting which is connected to both my gas furnace and my central system. This thermostat keeps my home at a good temperature all evening, but very early the next day, I woke up to an ice cold house. I was at least hoping that when I crawled out of bed my feet would hit the warm heated flooring, but that was not the case; My whole house felt like an ice box. I called my Heating and Air Conditioning provider and soon enough I found out that my WIFI thermostat had been hacked by a guy who didn’t like me.
