I had no idea how important insulation was in a house until I moved north.
When the company I worked for closed up, I decided to move back up north and be closer to my parents and family.
I wanted to make a clean break of everything. It didn’t take long to find a new job and a home. I had sold the house I lived down south and moved in with my sister for a couple months. When my home was ready to be moved in; I didn’t waste any time. When winter arrived, I knew I was going to have to make some adjustments. It had been a long time since I had experienced a northern winter. I didn’t realize how tough it was going to be. My furnace didn’t seem to keep it warm enough in the house. I called the HVAC company, but they said my furnace was in excellent condition. I knew that I had a problem, so I asked my brother-in-law to look at the furnace. He was an HVAC technician, and I trusted him. As soon as he walked in, he looked at the fireplace. He told me I was probably losing heat from the fireplace. He also checked the doors and windows. We spent the entire weekend putting weather stripping around the windows and doors. We also blocked off the fireplace to keep the heat from escaping up the chimney. The inside of the house had been upgraded, but the contractor forgot about the weatherstripping and the fireplace. I’m glad I have a smart brother-in-law.
