Last night at work, the AC unit in the kitchen stopped working. I was working on the line and the chef was expediting orders. It was very hot and humid in the kitchen, but the AC was running steadily until after 9. We were open for business until 11 pm. After the AC stopped blowing cold air, the indoor temperatures started to rise very quickly. We opened the back door so there was a slight breeze in the kitchen, but we couldn’t leave it open the whole time because of crime. The restaurant is located in an area where crime is a problem. We can’t leave the back door open and unattended for fear of being robbed. I asked the manager on the way out of the door last night if the air conditioner would be fixed when I went to work the next day. I didn’t feel confident with the answer that I received, so I decided to take the day off work. I didn’t want to deal with any more AC problems and I certainly didn’t want to cook in a kitchen without being comfortable. When I called the restaurant to inform them of my absence, the manager on duty was very upset and begged me to come to work. I told her that I was far too sick and suffering from a bad case of diarrhea. I knew the air conditioner still wouldn’t be fixed, because the owner of the restaurant takes forever to fix anything. I might not go back to work until it is repaired.
