People take a lot of things for granted in this country.
I remember growing up at my school in a less developed country. When I came here, I realized that there were a lot of things that people take as a given that were a luxury where I come from. Take something as simple as air conditioning in a classroom. My kids go to a school that has excellent air conditioning, and I know they will probably never have to worry about sitting in a hot classroom not being able to focus on their studies. My high school was small and poor, and we were pretty much at the mercy of the weather during that day. If it was the summer, we would be lucky if there was a cross breeze that we would be able to catch by opening the windows. If it was hot and humid and the air was still, we pretty much just had to deal with it. The cooler months were the best, as you can well imagine! It was the year after my senior year that my school finally had window air conditioners installed. What a thing to be jealous about! Anyway, that’s why I’m so glad my kids get to have such powerful air conditioning in their classrooms. Just the other day, my son was actually complaining that it was a little too cold. I reminded him that he could simply wear an extra layer. That’s when I realized I never really shared with my kids just how rough we had it back in my country when it came to simple things like air conditioning. Needless to say, they were a little more thankful for what they had when I finished my stories!
