My family sure is a piece of work! I have difficult family members no matter where you turn to look.
My immediate family can be full of conflict and difficult opinions.
My distant family can be even more difficult to interact with. I have to say, I’ve earned myself the title of black sheep of the family by refusing to put up with everyone’s nonsense. That’s why it was no big surprise to me when I was essentially left out of my great aunt’s will last year. She and I have never been extremely close and my oldest memory of her is visiting her house when I was a child. I was often sick as a kid and therefore was a bit needy. I was always cold and wrapped in sweatshirts and blankets, for starters. I remember arriving at her house and finding that the indoor air temperature was hovering around 65 degrees. Of course that was ridiculously cold for my tiny and sickly body at the time. I tried to ask my great-aunt if it was possible to increase the indoor air temperature, but she scoffed at me and said I should be tough like my brothers were. I needed to stop being such a girl and act like a man. Everyone else wanted the AC running hard. I spent the entire weekend shivering and covered in Goosebumps while my family mocked my discomfort. Years down the road, when my great aunt finally passed away, wouldn’t you know that the only thing she left me in her will was the massive air conditioning unit she had tortured me with as a child. Hilarious family jokes.
