Recreating a sense of home

Recreating a sense of home

My girlfriend moved to Southern California from the Northeast about five years ago. We met shortly after she arrived and we have been together ever since. She is really great and I hope to make this a permanent thing soon. I know she misses certain things about living back East and I wanted to surprise her with a celebration that would remind her of home. For her birthday I arranged for a local hall to be transformed into a winter wonderland. I hired decorators to give that snow like feel to the place and they really went all out. They brought in fake trees and filled them with snowflakes and twinkle lights, a fake snow machine to fill the air with little flecks of white for when she walked in and even found some flocked trees to set around to look like a snowy garden. The final touch was the added air conditioning units to bring the temperature down to a cool fifty degrees. It really felt like an early winter evening when we walked into the room. She almost cried when she saw the room and I knew that she really appreciated the effort. All of the guests had been told to dress warmly for the party and we all had a great time. At the end of the night I asked her if she missed having this type of weather and she said that she definitely did not. She said she loved her surprise but was thankful that it was only a temporary thing because she would rather live with the warmth year round.
