I know that having the furnace serviced is a normal part of owning a furnace and of our pre-winter maintenance.

I’m not sure why we didn’t have the maintenance done on the furnace, but somehow, it had just been overlooked.

I don’t know if we would have even remembered when we did, if our furnace hadn’t started blowing cold air instead of warm. I knew that I had the thermostat set a bit lower this year, but I didn’t have the air conditioning on. The thermostat was set at sixty-eight and the temperature in the house was down to fifty-eight. I called the HVAC company and asked them if they could come to the house before the chance of our pipes freezing, occurred. Three hours later, the HVAC technician was in the house and working on our furnace. They asked us if we had our maintenance done on the furnace. I was going to say yes, but my husband told the HVAC tech that we hadn’t. He told us that if we had our furnace maintenance done, he wouldn’t be there working on the furnace at that moment. The maintenance would have picked up on the problem with the furnace and it could have been repaired during the regular yearly inspection. We already felt bad enough about not having the inspection and now to find out we had to go without heat for any length of time because of it, just add salt to the wound. I vowed that we would never forget to have our annual maintenance done on the furnace or the air conditioning. Making the repairs were much more expensive than having the maintenance done.
