Victorian house and HVAC

I have always wondered if back in the victorian era, how on earth those people kept cool in the hot summer months.

I have also wondered how those people stayed warm in the winters. I know that they had steam boilers for heat in that time, however, what about the air conditioning? I have done a decent amount of research on this subject and have come up with nothing! There are a lot of people wondering the same thing I am about air conditioner in that era of the world. But, there is no documentation about what went on to provide those people cool air when it was incredibly hot outside! It’s obvious that they had done something in the form of air conditioner. Otherwise, wouldn’t pretty much everyone have been dead right away? Especially in the southwestern section of the US of America. That is a pretty darn warm region! And back then, I am sure it was no different. Maybe they made buckets of ice and poured it on themselves, or maybe some genius did come up with the concept of air conditioner. It is something that I guess we will never know for sure. I have tried hunting through several websites on the internet, clicked several live links for more information on the subject. But, those live links proved to be a bunch of fake spam, then so, I finally gave up on researching this subject of air conditioner in the victorian era.
