My HVAC supervisor lost a finger in an accident

Nick January 28, 2020

My supervisor at work told me the most horrific story.

I had asked her about her hand, and why she was missing part of her ring finger, and she explained how she forgot to take her wedding ring off before a repair job once.

All it took was once, and the ring got caught up on something. When the machine turned on then POP it just ripped off the end of her finger. They never even found the ring or the finger after that, which is really creepy to me. After that story, I never wear any jewelry to work at all. As an HVAC tech I work with my hands a lot, so I can’t risk getting anything hooked or caught on anything. I used to wear work gloves, and I still do, but sometimes with the smaller HVAC components that prevent me from being able to wear gloves. I love my job, but it’s hard work, and I can’t imagine doing my full complement of heating and cooling duties if I lost a finger at some point. That’s what happened to my supervisor, who had been an HVAC tech before losing her finger, and then moved into managing the office. Although some days I think working in the office would be preferable to doing so many HVAC house calls, I certainly wouldn’t want to lose a finger to get that job! The way I see it I have about two or three more years as an HVAC tech working house calls before I can get a promotion to supervisor.
