My wife and I were on our way home from a weekend in the country.
We were having trouble with the car.
The engine kept overheating and I thought it was best to find a hotel for the night. It was getting close to dark and I knew it would be impossible to repair the car without daylight. We were in the middle of a small town when the engine reached the hottest point. There was a hotel on the corner by the red light and my wife and I took this as a sign that we should stop for the night. We went inside the office and the clerk told my wife and I that the hotel was open but they were in the middle of renovations. He apologized for the dust, but he said they had a couple of rooms available on the first floor. My wife and I were tired and we just wanted to sleep for a couple of hours. I was already concerned about the car and I didn’t want to bother with finding a different hotel. When we got to our room, I became concerned about our night of sleep as well. The room looked very dirty and dingy. I turned on the heater so we could warm up the cold air, but nothing happened when I set the dial to heat. I tried changing the dial from cool to heat and then back again hoping that would trigger the heater. I turned the knob all the way to the warmest position on the heater dial. Still, nothing but a loud humming sound. We ended up leaving the room in the middle of the night.
