Needing to run furnace in April

Nick May 5, 2022

My husband and I have two homes and divide our time between them.

The one house is located in the northeastern area while the other is down south.

Our goal is to enjoy the best weather in each spot. We avoid the brutal heat and humidity down south by spending the summer months up north. We miss out on the sub zero temperatures, bitter wind chill and feet of snow accumulation by heading south for the winter. We are usually in our southern home from November until April. While we’re away, we still need to operate the furnace at a low setting. With outdoor temperatures down to negative twenty-five, there is some concern over water pipes freezing and bursting. We have invested into smart thermostats for each home so that we can monitor and make adjustments to temperature. We get notified if there is a power outage or temperature fluctuation. We can set a lower winter temperature and easily raise the setting from the app on our phones when we decide to relocate. Normally, when we arrive in our northern home, sometime in April, we no longer need to rely on the furnace. We’re able to open the windows, bring in some outside air and freshen up the living environment. This past year, the weather was still terrible. We arrived at temperatures in the thirties, gray skies and freezing rain. It was awful. We turned up the thermostat and kept the furnace operating until the end of May. We may need to devote more of our time to our southern home. I don’t really mind the heat. The air conditioner takes care of it. I am not a fan of the cold and snow.
