I recently hired two local artists to come work for me, much to the chagrin of my full-time crew. These guys work hard, and have for years, so they were nonplussed to see a couple of new hires that had no experience in the HVAC industry. I had to hold a staff meeting, so I could explain in detail exactly why I was making this move. It was a risk, to be sure, but if it paid off then everyone would be making a lot more money. Once they heard about possible pay raises, everyone was fully invested in our new high-end HVAC art venture. When this company started there was only one other HVAC contractor in the area. These days the ranks of the industry have swelled to capacity, and there are no less than 12 other HVAC contractors. With so many companies all vying for the same customers, I knew that my HVAC company had to do something to set itself apart. My idea was using customized art, in the mediums of paint and metalwork, to create HVAC systems that no one else had. We all get our HVAC components from the same factories, but when we customize the systems then they become utterly unique. Sarah is a painter, and I’m having her put colors and designs on things like ductwork, grates, and air vents. Kent is a sculptor, and I have him doing custom metal housing for the big, boxy HVAC air handling units that sit in the yard. If we all work together as a team, this HVAC company can go to the next level.
