There were no stairs to get into the furnace room.

There were no stairs to get into the furnace room.

Before I bought our home, I lived in many apartment buildings.

The last rental component I lived in, was half a double home.

I had a furnace for our unit, and there was a furnace for the other unit. I needed to have an Heating and A/C serviceman disinfect the furnace and get it ready for winter, so I called the local Heating and A/C supplier. Two afternoons later, the Heating and A/C serviceman and I were looiing into this square hole that led down to the furnace. There wasn’t a ladder or folding steps and both of us were both wondering how he was going to get downstairs to the furnace. I called the building owner and asked him how both of us accessed the furnace. He told me I had to ask the neighbor to let him in so he could down the basement stairs and then enter into our furnace area. The neighbors were working. He then told me I could go into the attic and go through their attic door and get into their apartment that way. I didn’t want to be arrested for entering their lake home when they weren’t home. He said to leave a note saying that he gave us permission. I was not going into their apartment by going through the attic, just to get to the furnace. If that was the only entrance, he needed to come over and open the door for the Heating and A/C serviceman. He gave me a thirty afternoon notice for eviction because I was being stubborn. The Heating and A/C serviceman told me I’d be fortunate if he didn’t charge me for cutting the lease, and I just looked at him. I had a feeling he was right.
