There were no stairs to get into the furnace room.

Before I bought my home, I lived in several apartment buildings.

The last rental unit I lived in, was half a double home.

I had a furnace for my unit, and there was a furnace for the other unit. I needed to have an HVAC technician clean the furnace and get it ready for winter, so I called the local HVAC company. Two days later, the HVAC technician and I were looiing into this square hole that led down to the furnace. There wasn’t a ladder or folding steps and we were both wondering how he was going to get downstairs to the furnace. I called the landlord and asked him how we accessed the furnace. He told me I had to ask the neighbor to let him in so he could down the basement stairs and then enter into my furnace area. The neighbors were working. He then told me I could go into the attic and go through their attic door and get into their apartment that way. I didn’t want to be arrested for entering their home when they weren’t home. He said to leave a note saying that he gave us permission. I was not going into their apartment by going through the attic, just to get to the furnace. If that was the only entrance, he needed to come over and open the door for the HVAC technician. He gave me a thirty day notice for eviction because I was being stubborn. The HVAC technician told me I’d be lucky if he didn’t charge me for breaking the lease, and I just looked at him. I had a feeling he was right.
