Chaos and Routine

Chaos and Routine

Nick January 22, 2021

I used to live a life with a routine.

I liked waking up each day knowing what our schedule was and at what time our meals will be eaten. At work, I busy our appointments weeks ahead that allowed myself and others to system and thus avoid wasteful meetings. I was a lousy Boy Scout, but because there was no merit badge for being punctual, our sash reMained unadorned. Then I met Maria, a fiery personality who stole our heart. With her numerous young youngsters, our routine driven life became one of chaos. I didn’t know what would happen in the next hour, much less the next day. My 7:00 p.m. dinner was often delayed until midnight and when the youngsters got sick, our well-planned meetings were canceled while I waited at the doctor’s office. After a while, the two of us settled into controlled chaos. The youngsters settled down a bit, but our main source of chaos became Maria who is quite spontaneous by nature. I’ve even become a bit chaotic as our normal bedtime, once at 10:30 p.m. now fluctuates. My work is still routine but the only thing that remains on-schedule in our house is the Heating and Air Conditioning system! Every six months, in May and September, Fred, our qualified Heating and Air Conditioning serviceman, cleans the air duct and preps the unit for the approaching Summer or Winter months. She has a checklist of tasks savor inspecting the Heating and Air Conditioning fan, testing the oil furnace, and checking refrigerant levels that she carries out in the same order each and every time. At the end of every call, she reminds myself and others to check the filters and to never try to make repairs myself. I certainly like Maria, although I often fantasize about having Fred’s routine life.
