I never thought that I would complain about a lack of distraction in my immediate environment. For as long as I can remember, I have had trouble focusing on my work because there is always something unfortunate happening around me. If the dogs aren’t barking and scratching at the door, then the cat is probably running across my keyboard. If my mom isn’t slamming cabinets and stomping across the floor, then the TV is probably cranked up to volume a hundred for no apparent reason. However, I never would have thought that a lack of background noise from my heating, cooling, and air quality control system would be so disturbing to my work everyday. When I moved into this house I was not exactly thrilled about the heating, cooling, and ventilation plan. The air conditioning unit was about 10 years old and the large forced air furnace was ready to die at any point. I knew that I needed to have the heating system replaced right away before I wound up with a heating and cooling emergency in the middle of winter. However, I put off the furnace replacement for about a year. In that time, apparently I grew very accustomed to the loud hums and bangs that often emerge from my old forced air furnace. When I had the heating system replaced with a brand new air handling device, I was shockingly upset by the lack of sound created by my air temperature control unit. It’s just too quiet. These days, I have to use a background noise app to recreate the sounds of my old furnace if I want to concentrate.
