Tension in the Air

Tension in the Air

We’ve all had that feeling that is perfectly described by the term “tension in the air”; Science and logic say there is no such thing, although I can cite several examples that support its existence.

In baseball, if a pitcher is working on a no-hitter or a perfect game, the tension in the air of the venue will begin to grow with each pitch.

If a batter breaks up the no-hitter the tension is instantaneously released and there may be a smattering of applause from the crowd. If the pitcher completes the no-hitter, that bubble of tension will burst as the pitcher’s teammates and the crowd celebrate the event. The job offers times when the tension in the air is palpable as when someone is about to get fired or an angry boss is pacing the halls. There can even be tension in the air between more than one people who are attracted to each other however have yet to admit it. My home is another venue where the atmosphere can think thick with tension such as when the power goes out or when our Heating and A/C plan decides to take an unscheduled getaway. Even a brief power outage is enough to make the air in our home stale. It puts me in a terrible mood, however when the Heating and A/C stops because I forgot to schedule its semi-annual tune-up and cleaning, the tension in the air grows as the room becomes more uncomfortable. When the qualified Heating and A/C business arrives to make repairs, our family becomes more distraught for the task to be completed just like that crowd enjoying a no-hitter. Anyone who has experienced a lengthy time with no Heating and A/C knows that when that first blast of cool air returns, it is indeed a reason to celebrate.
