Bigger is definitely not always better

Bigger is definitely not always better

Bigger is not always better, and that is especially true when it comes to climate control.

  • Put simply, your HVAC system needs to be properly sized for your home in order for it to work the way you want it to work.

If your air conditioner is too big for your home, there are a few signs. One of the easiest ways to tell that your A/C is too big for your home is if it cycles on and off far too quickly. You might think that it’s a good thing that your air conditioner is able to cool down your entire home very quickly. However, there is another function of an air conditioner besides merely introducing cool air into the home. You see, the air conditioner is not simply introducing cool air into the home. Part of the process is drawing hot air out. It is also drawing out humidity as it works. If your air conditioner shuts off too quickly, it does not have the time to draw out humidity. You’ll end up stuck with an overly humid home. The constant cycling on and off of your air conditioner system will also tax the unit and cause it to wear out much more quickly than it normally would. Another problem is that your energy bills will increase. Air conditioners require more power when they are cycling on than they do after they’ve been running for a while. So, if your air conditioner is constantly cycling on and off it is using more power. So if you want your air conditioner to run long enough to eliminate humidity, keep your home cool, and keep down energy costs, make sure it is properly sized.
