Investing in a generator to ensure heating and cooling during power outages

Power outages are fairly common in my local area.

  • We experience very severe weather, just about all year long.

In the spring, when the temperature suddenly warms up, there’s concerns over the snow melt causing flooding. In the winter, we suffer blizzards with feet of now falling within a matter of hours and temperatures down to twenty below zero. Thunderstorms are common in both the summer and fall, often bringing torrential downpours. Anytime the weather turns ugly, there’s usually very high winds. The winds knock down branches, trees and power lines. We can be left without electricity for a few minutes, a few hours or over a week. When there’s no power, there’s no access to heating, cooling, water heating, sump pumps, refrigerator, lights or any modern convenience. We can’t flush the toilet, take a shower or regulate the temperature of the house. In the summer, we can expect the food in the refrigerator to spoil and excess humidity to cause mold and mildew growth. Without air conditioning, the house becomes terribly hot and sticky. During the colder weather, we worry about pipes freezing and being forced to move into a hotel. We can’t stay in the house without a working heating system if the temperature plummets. Although a standby generator is a very large investment, I feel it was worth it. The generator is permanently installed outside my home and automatically starts up and takes over in the event of a power outage. It prevents damage, keeps our essential systems operational and allows my family to continue their everyday lives.
