My old man was one of those dudes who was really proud to not call any sort of service professional.
His house was his kingdom so, he felt as though he should take care of everything in it. By and large, he was actually able to do just that. That was a different time though. He could work on stuff without worrying about ruining some computer chip or something. He could could rip into the HVAC furnace fairly confidently. This ethic was passed along to me. Only now, I find there are a lot fewer things that I can actually repair or work on myself. I can do stuff to my old truck and have a look at some of the household appliances. But, when I open something up only to find all sorts of tech jammed in there, I tend to reach for the phone. I certainly wish I had called an HVAC pro when the furnace shut down not too long ago. It shut down with a bit of a bang one day. My instinct was to check it out but, my brain was telling me to call the HVAC professionals. I decided to look at the furnace for a minute. It was pretty immediately clear that there was a burnt out switch. So, I removed it, went to the big box hardware place and bought a replacement. I put the new part in and the furnace started right up. Then later that day, it slammed shut with some bad sounds. Turns out the part was not OME so, it let the furnace get too hot. Now, my furnace is ruined and I have to pay out of my own pocket. My repair attempt voided the warranty.
