Every homeowner goes through it. There are times when issues concerning the house are the main priority and have to be handled. It is no fun when these things come on suddenly, like when the fridge dies with hundreds of dollars of stuff in it. But, there is nothing to do but to get to solving the problem. However, there are other issues that can be planned for and then executed. Putting a new roof on a house is a great example. After fixing that first leak, you best be planning to put on a new roof. The same goes for the HVAC. Our professional heating and cooling technician told us, almost two years ago, that we should begin planning to replace the HVAC unit. I had noticed that the HVAC was starting cycle longer in order to meet demand. This was proven as the utility bills continued to rise. So, we started saving for the new heating and cooling unit. First, we began a separate savings account that we funded each month out our paychecks. Our hope was to be able to pay for the entire thing when we chose the new HVAC model. Next, about six months ago, we had the HVAC contractor come out to help us sift through all of our options. However, while he was inspecting the house, he found that our air ducts were not up to snuff. There were significant portions of the ductwork that were clearly decayed and unusable. We had hoped to be able to simply remove those sections and replace them. This didn’t work because the old ducts would not fit properly with the new sections. We ended up having to gut the entire ductwork system. An expense we didn’t see coming.
