I work downtown in an older building. The building has a lot of historic significance, so the city doesn’t really make a lot of changes. A lot of those changes would really help out with the indoor atmosphere. They don’t want to update the building with a new central heating and air conditioning system, because of the old boiler in the basement. I happen to work in the building and the indoor air quality is getting worse and worse each year. I used to never have a problem with my allergies at work, but now I find myself sneezing and coughing all of the time. I can see the flecks of dust in the indoor atmosphere. I swear that they get bigger each year. I had an allergy attack last week and the boss finally agreed to let me get an air purifier to put on my desk. The personal air purifier won’t completely help the problem, but at least it will give me a small amount of relief when I am sitting at my desk. I had been asking the boss to let me have a personal air purifier for months and months and the guy said it was not possible because then everyone would want a fan or air purifier of their own. Human resources department told him that was not allowable and made him let me bring an air purifier to work. I know the guy is unhappy that he was overridden, but he can’t ignore the health and safety of the employees that are working in the older building.
