I once thought that the only thing fortune tellers could predict is that they will grow richer when they bilk their customers out of their hard-earned money.
Nonetheless, my wife believes in them even after I pointed out that she ended up with me instead of the tall, handsome, and rich stranger predicted by a Tarot card reading before she met me.
Some time ago she insisted that I go with her to see that same fortune teller. The prophetess explained that in some cultures, I would have the qualities that she predicted but she was hard-pressed to name where that magical place was located. Instead, she went on to tell us what would happen in the near future. She predicted that a mechanical beast with long tentacles would soon dominate our lives and that we would have sweat dripping from our brow and then be tormented by an icy avalanche before our ordeal was over. I was not too worried until she said my wife was still in line to meet that handsome stranger. I must now admit the seer was right. We endured that summer sweating it out when our HVAC system, with several long tentacle like ducts broke down and we did not have the cash to get it fixed. That winter we used our fireplace, but I was knocked over when a hardened slab of ice fell from my roof while I was shoveling snow. Finally, I used my Christmas bonus from work to get the HVAC unit fixed. Soon, a tall handsome HVAC technician appeared at our door to make the prophecy complete, but I told him to stay away from my wife.
