Things Are Not What They Seem

Things Are Not What They Seem

The image of ladies sitting under the cone-like hair dryers at a salon amuses me today just like it did years ago.

I’ve nothing against it but I am a bit jealous because I don’t have enough hair left on my head to even worry about.

What I object to is that my mother and I’m sure the ladies of today pay good money for what they call a “perm” or “permanent”. It is anything but that because after a few days or after the first shampoo one’s hair returns to its natural state. The world is full of things that are not what they seem to be. An American bald eagle is not bald like I nearly am, its head is covered with white feathers. A Turkish bath is of Roman origins. I won’t mention what a “sweetbread” is. My biggest complaint about misleading descriptions is with HVAC. The heating and ventilation aspects are straight-forward but the term air conditioning or AC bothers me. AC units don’t “condition” anything, they simply replace the warm air in your building with cooler air via a heat transfer process. There are no fancy and expensive creams or conditioning liquids, there is only the water that condenses to lower the relative humidity. The only conditioning that an AC unit does is to the people who live in comfort with the replaced cool air. I will admit, however, that HVAC sounds better than HVPC for “people conditioner”. I don’t have to worry about it for a while because I’ll be sleeping in the doghouse with no HVAC after I broke into laughter at my wife’s new hairstyle. I’m happy for her sake that it is not “permanent”.
