I have a cousin who acts like he lives in the old days when they didn’t have electricity or HVAC systems.
I went to his house a few times and he runs a little farm on his property. He doesn’t have any air conditioning in the summer months and it seems that he never even uses electricity. He has candles for lighting and I guess he uses a manual fan sometimes if he is feeling overheated. When I was at his place, I was feeling very uncomfortable. The air quality isn’t very good at all and the place either feels very overheated or pretty chilly. In the winter season, he has a few fireplaces around the house that he uses. I have to admit, it’s a pretty good way to save big money on the heating and cooling bills, but I don’t think I could ever live in such a way. The good news is that he has plumbing with a working shower, so at least he has that going for him. I don’t know how he can get by without using any electricity though. Instead of using a fridge, he has this cold box that he puts ice in for his meats and things like that. I guess that’s kind of like a fridge, but it seems like such a hassle to me to always fill it up with ice all of the time. He doesn’t even use a phone in his house, you just have to go visit and hope that he is home. There have been a few times I went to his place and he wasn’t even there.
