My friend had a huge close call with his toddler. He was relaxing in front of the fireplace and he had the gate in front of there so the toddler wouldn’t get to the fire. Then my buddy ended up dozing off for a little while and next thing he knew when he woke up, the carpet was on fire! His child was screaming and he saw that he somehow managed to knock down the gate and then picked up a burning piece of wood and threw it on the carpet. My buddy grabbed his son and shouted at his wife to get out of the house. He even ran back to get the fire extinguisher but it was too late, the fire spread all around and the house was inevitably going to burn down. He never thought his child would manage to break down the gate around the fireplace, but he was wrong. Fortunately, my buddy had good insurance that covered fires, and his home was entirely covered even in the case of burning down the way it did. His insurance covered his hotel stay while his home was being rebuilt with a new fireplace. He told me that the hotel was really nice too with a very cozy HVAC system. He said they had a smart thermostat and everything and it was fun adjusting the temperature control settings. He says that when his home is finished being rebuilt, he definitely wants to get a smart thermostat and he’s going to make sure he has a better gate to protect his toddler.
