Shortly after she and my new brother-in-law got back from their honeymoon, my little sister wanted to throw a little dinner party at their new house for about a dozen people.
I wanted to be there to support her, of course, but I had my doubts about her ability as a hostess.
She’s never really been good at that kind of thing, but I thought that maybe she was making strides in becoming better at it. However, after the dinner party that she put on, I’m now not so sure about that at all. It wasn’t that the food wasn’t good or anything like that. She actually did really well with the menu and with being hospitable. The problem that we ended up having was the fact that she had the thermostat settings way too high in the house. I guess she wasn’t factoring in the fact that there was going to be all of that body heat in her dining room and her living room. Since the weather outside was really cold, I think that she had it in her mind that she needed to turn the thermostat up so that her guests would be comfortable. However, it ended up being a big issue for us because with all of the extra bodies in the house, the place got hotter and hotter inside. By the time we had our salads and some bread, I was sweating like crazy and wishing for some air conditioning. The heating from the furnace was absolutely relentless, though. I kept trying to signal my sister that she needed to go cut the heat down on the thermostat, but she just never really got the message. I think everybody was pretty miserable because nobody wanted to stick around after dessert.
