Why are parents harder on their own children than on anybody else's?

The other guys would handle what I was doing wrong, and show me the right way to do an HVAC job

When I was growing up, my dad always held us up to a higher standard than what other parents did. He said he expected to succeed and be the best person we could be. The higher standard he held us up to, the harder we strived to reach it. When I got old enough to go to college, I went to HVAC technical school and got my certification. I wondered if working with dad would be the same as growing up with him. I planned on joining his HVAC company, and I already knew he would expect more from me than any other HVAC technician. I often wondered why parents are harder on their own children than on anybody else? When I said something to my dad about this, he shrugged. He said that since I was working with him, I was a direct result of his hard work. I had to live up to the image the men had of him. Although I didn’t think this was fair, I still worked harder than any other new HVAC technician. I always knew when I was doing a good job because he didn’t bother me at work to tell me, like he did other HVAC technicians. He praised and reprimanded me at home. The other guys would handle what I was doing wrong, and show me the right way to do an HVAC job. Working with my dad was the best idea I ever had. I learned the proper way to conduct myself at work, and how to properly work on HVAC systems. At least, it was the proper way according to my dad.
